Watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire on Amazon now. As the women orbit each other, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse's first moments of freedom.ĭoes it have a happy ending? Not really, but no one dies. Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing so she observes her by day and paints her secretly at night. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of a forbidden love affair and romance between an aristocrat, Héloïse, and a painter, Marianne, who is commissioned to paint her portrait by Héloïse’s mother. Directed by the talented Alice Wu, who also made the Netflix original, The Half of It (another must-watch LGBTQ movie). Saving Face was one of those rare lesbian movies that did not feature psychopaths or end up killing off the lesbian characters. It’s a heartfelt story that touches upon love, coming out, mother-daughter relationship, the clash between Asian & American culture, and more. Saving Face is about a Chinese-American lesbian and her traditionalist mother who are both reluctant to go public with secret loves that clash against cultural expectations. This is one of our favorite movies of all time and will always have a special place in our hearts.
